COURSE DESCRIPTION

Utilization of turfgrasses for lawns and recreational areas. Emphasis on: the cultural and environmental benefits of grassed areas, concepts of grass growth and development, selecting adapted grasses for proper use, techniques for successful establishment and management of cool-and-warm-season turfgrasses, fertilization, irrigation, aeration, and pest management. The history and benefit of natural and artificial sports fields will also be discussed.


COURSE OBJECTIVES/GOALS

In order to establish and maintain a high quality lawn with a reasonable input of time and money, one must have a sound understanding of how to select and utilize those grasses best adapted for a particular use.


The overall objective of this course is to introduce students to the grasses commonly used for turf applications in the U.S., with particular emphasis on selecting grasses best adapted for home and commercial lawn use in the southeastern U.S. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have an understanding of:


  1. Principles for choosing grass species adapted to a particular ecological situation.
  1. Basic concepts of grass growth and development as they relate to maintenance of mown areas.
  1. The characteristics of cool- and warm-season turfgrasses and their use in various lawn applications.
  1. Techniques for successfully establishing and maintaining turfgrass areas.
  1. Environmental benefits of proper turfgrass selection and use.
  1. Basic grass morphology and its application to grass identification.
  1. The identification of common cool- and warm-season turfgrasses used in the U.S.
  1. The identification of turfgrass weeds and principles for their control.
