Fire ants have almost been a forgotten pest this summer because they tend to stop building mounds during hot dry weather. Expect this situation to change very soon. We believe that the current rains will stimulate a frenzied period of mound-building as we proceed into the fall season. If you have had fire ant problems before, be ready for a new round of mound-building in the weeks to come. Fire ant baits give good control when applied under dry conditions. Contact insecticides are another option and may be necessary if wet conditions dominate our fall weather.
