Hot Summer Brings Challenges to Turf

August 9, 2010

The hot summer has been challenging in many ways, but the hot temperatures have not necessarily pushed insect development along as fast as we might think.  White grubs are still quite small and if you haven't treated yet, you may still obtain fairly good control with an application if you can follow it up with irrigation or a good rain occurs in the next few days.  Mole crickets also appear to be a little behind schedule. Recent rains have reactivated fire ants, but with the current hot temperatures, baits are still not going to work too well. Wait until temperatures cool off a bit before expecting to get the best performance.  Stay alert for fall armyworms. They are present in the state and I do expect problems with them in August and September.
