Usually heart shaped, but can vary from 1.5 to 3 times longer than wide. The leaves are pinnately veined, leathery, and can float on the water's surface or protrude into the air.
Bright yellow in color, round, and borne on a long stalk slightly above the water surface. The flowers are somewhat unusual in that they do not have discernable "petals" and do not open or close during a photoperiod like other plants in the waterlily family.
