Art Bruneau

2009 North Carolina State University Turfgrass Field Day

August 12, 2009
Raleigh, NC

This year, the NCSU Turfgrass Field Day will be held at the Lake Wheeler Turfgrass Field Lab. Topics will cover a variety of turf issues including: sod production, lawn care and maintenance, sports turf management, golf, environmental issues, and more. Research advancements on insect, weed, and disease pests will be addressed, and Dr. Susana Milla-Lewis, the new NCSU turf breeder, will be on site for everyone to meet.

As part of a very special celebration of his 26 years here, the faculty and staff will send its own Dr. Art Bruneau off to his well earned retirement with the Inaugural Art Bruneau Golf Tournament Fundraiser at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course, followed by a dinner and “Art Roast”. Proceeds of these events will benefit turfgrass research through the NC Agricultural Foundation. If you are one of the many extension specialists, students, faculty or turf professionals that Art has touched over the years, please take this opportunity to visit with him at field day, play the new golf course, eat, and help us send Dr. Bruneau off in style while helping raise funds for scholarships and research.

RESEARCH

NTEP TRIALS: Dr. Art Bruneau's Legacy to NC STATE

Dr. Art Bruneau started the NCSU affiliation with the NTEP (National Turfgrass Evaluation Program) Research trials upon his arrival to the NCSU Turfgrass Program in 1983. Making this program an integral focus of his research and time here at NCSU, Dr. Bruneau's work has helped to define the turf program making it the success it is today.

The first NTEP trial established in NC was the 1985 Kentucky bluegrass trial. It was established in two locations, Charlotte and Goldsboro.  Since the onset of this cooperation, NCSU has become a primary host for many of the NTEP variety trials conducted over the last 15 years. Field Day offers the industry and public a unique opportunity to review the NTEP plots with the researchers to gain valuable insights into the appropriate varieties for their turfgrass applications.

TURFGRASS BREEDING PROGRAM

Susanna Milla-Lewis

Dr. Susanna Milla-Lewis was selected from a national list of applicants to join the NCSU turfgrass program as its new turfgrass breeding specialist. Her extensive resume includes working with great success in other NC commodity breeding programs such as peanuts and sweet potatoes.

Dr. Milla-Lewis has hit the ground running here at NCSU and will be available to discuss an overview of her short and long term plans for her research at Field Day. She will be presenting research on the "Evaluation of South African Bermudagrass for shade and drought tolerance". This will be a great opportunity for seed and sod producers to meet Dr. Milla-Lewis and discuss their interests as it will apply to her work.
