The Department of Administration is seeking applicants for Grounds Supervisor in the Division of Facility Management. This position is responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of plantings; the design installation and maintenance of hardscapes; the maintenance of permanent parking lots; and the construction and maintenance of temporary parking lots for the Garner Road and Blue Ridge Road complexes. Job duties include: Establishing annual goals for the development of the grounds in the downtown government complex and developing detailed work plans to accomplish goals under the limitations of the annual budget; working with the Landscape Services Director in developing landscape designs for the complex; establishing an annual maintenance program and schedule which includes seeding, fertilizing, irrigating, mowing, pruning, chemical spraying, soil amending, plant/tree removal, mechanical weeding, etc. to provide an aesthetically pleasing, healthy and safe environment for employees, city residents, and visitors; designing and implementing landscaping construction projects involving earth moving; grading; drainage; and concrete, masonry, and wooden structures; participating in grounds maintenance and construction projects as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES: Considerable knowledge of plant diseases and pests, plant and soil chemistry, a wide variety of plant species and their growth requirements; considerable knowledge of landscape design principles and practices; considerable knowledge of landscape construction and maintenance including paving, grading, and heavy equipment operation; considerable knowledge of tree diseases and their treatment, tree growth requirements, and tree maintenance such as pruning, cabling and bolting, and root and trunk injection fertilizer techniques; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate crew supervisors; ability to motivate employees to perform tasks to meet customer expectations; ability to communicate with customers to determine their requirements, to explain work operations, and to resolve differences of opinion; and the ability to instruct and train employees. Founded in 1968, River Hills Country Club is an 18-hole private facility located in Lake Wylie, SC. Originally designed by William Byrd and developed by Sea Pines, River Hills Golf Course is reputed to be one of the finest in the South, often considered a "Hidden Gem". In 2012, architect Kris Spence assisted in renovating the greens from Penncross Bentgrass to Champion Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grass. Our championship golf course hosts several golf associations, organized events, professional tournaments and regular play throughout the year. The golf course has many varieties of grasses ranging from 419 Bermuda grass tees, fairways and approaches to Palisades Zoysia bunker faces. We also planted “native” grasses around the course to become more environmentally friendly.
The assistant superintendent’s responsibilities will include but not limited to the following: staff supervision, daily job assigning, chemical and fertilizer applications, staff training, irrigation maintenance, and course set up. This position is ideal for a highly motivated college grad looking to further their education and knowledge in their path towards becoming a golf course superintendent. Applicants are required to have at least a 2 year Turfgrass Degree and 1 year of golf course work or internship. Obtaining a SC pesticide license within the first year of employment is required.
Benefits such as health, (optional) dental and vision insurance will be offered after 60 days from start date. After one year of employment paid vacation and sick time will be given.
